None of this is true. “Beauty” is a currency system like the gold standard. Like any economy, it is determined by politics, and in the modern age in the West it is the last, best belief system that keeps male dominance intact. – Naomi Wolf, Beauty Myth
As women released themselves from the feminine mystique of domesticity, the beauty myth took over its lost ground, expanding as it waned to carry on its work of social control.
─ The Beauty Myth / Naomi Wolf, p10
If the icon of the anorexic fashion model were one flat image out of a full spectrum in which young girls could find a thousand wild and tantalizing visions of possible futures, that icon would not have the power to hurt them; fashion and beauty scenarios would be yet another source of the infinite pleasures and intrigues of life in the female body. – Naomi Wolf, Beauty Myth (p2)
More women have more money and power and scope and legal recognition than we have ever had before; but in terms of how we feel about ourselves physically, we may actually be worse off than our unliberated grandmothers. Recent research consistently shows that inside the majority of the West’s controlled, attractive, successful working women, there is a secret “underlife” poisoning our freedom; infused with notions of beauty, it is a dark vein of self-hatred, physical obsessions, terror of aging, and dread of lost control. – Naomi Wolf, Beauty Myth
I remember reading this books during my dissertation, as a leisure read.
There were a lot of saying and evidence-based questioning over women and beauty,
in many ways beauty were posed as a cage from social expectation, women continuously suffer from all forms of oppression over the beauty…
From consumerism kept nagging us to buy all kinds of products to keep young,
to telling young girls the only way to happiness is to be thin…
along with media bombarding the ideal through magazines and videos…
While for women in bigger sizes, often have to look ugly because of the limited choices they were given.
It is horrible in situation – anorexia, nastiness between women and so on…caused by this twisted ideal of beauty.
