– Lizzie Siddal –

Lizzie-UK-jktDante Gabriel Rossetti: Beata Beatrix, ca 1864-70.

Currently reading “Lizzie Siddal: The Tragedy of a Pre-Raphaelite Supermodel” by Lucinda Hawksley, while “Blonde” by Joyce Carol Oates and Alain de Botton are in hiatus on the shelves.

I have always been fascinated by Lizzie’s beauty without knowing how and why, but I have a strong suspicions that she was being presented in the paintinga she modelled for as a figure of holiness and goddess-like. Therefore I bought the book to read more of her life, especially her difficulties to progress in society.

Her romance with Dante Rossetti was also a fascinating story too, the story reminded me how some actresses have the world who loved them, but the one person they wanted the love from had eyes on someone else and they could do nothing toward such as turning things around.

I shall read some more & let you know later about the book, but the author wrote with grace, words flow like water, helped people engaged with it.

P.s. Recently heard on B.Cu. found a new girlfriend with a name: Sophie Hunter. She was from a background that anyone would envy, I was happy he found someone, yet found it hard not to envy S.Hu’s background…

(Coco Rocha, Cameron Russell and Karlie Kloss – my favorite Models)

Watching the video of models catwalking for Victoria’s Secret Fashion show, I tried to recall the memories I had on the fascination of the profession.

I remembered how I was fascinated by the glamour shown in magazines and campaigns, as if they were hardly human and instead a set of art work in human shape. Like any ordinary people, I believed their lives were so glamorous that they must be feeling the queen of the world.

Yet as I grown up and encountering more and more social issues in life, I began to see the other side of being a model. Listening to Cameron Russell feeling guilty over her beauty brought her many benefits that she didn’t deserve, was almost a shock to me. The most common thing I have heard was, the difficulties of staying slim for dresses, have to calculate calories and everything. I realized then how horrendous their lives can be at times, especially after seeing how Victoria’s Secret “select” a set of models to model for their lingerie.

This film (despite the fact I yet to watch it) had brought the dark side of being a model much closer and up-front of my face, through the trailer, already the modelling industry was portrayed as something empty and robotic when models were constantly walking. Not just they are physically walking, but their lives just seemed have no stopping place for a breath. The condition at the same time can be equally problematic, they often received many sexual assault like sex worker, based on their existence are as if nothing more than a set of artwork…
